What brought you to crossfit and to WLCF? Did you have specific goals or something you were seeking to change?
For years I had been looking for a way to get fitness as part of my daily life in a way that I would enjoy and stick to. I need diversity in the exercises, a supportive group environment to help push and motivate, but also a schedule that works with my busy life.
My wife Liza started at WLCF a few months before, and she knew this was exactly what I had been looking for. As always – she was right!
What keeps you coming back?
I’m hooked! The quality of the coaching, the support and motivation from the group environment, and improvements I see in myself everyday always make me look forward to coming back the next day.
What changes have you seen in yourself (physically, mentally, as a person, etc)?
Strength, endurance and stamina have improved dramatically. Also, I’m enjoying increased muscle mass without gaining weight, so I must be burning fat!
Crossfit has also helped in other sports – such as long distance running, trail running, and skiing.
More importantly, with the workouts starting early morning, I have more energy throughout the day.
What’s been the biggest challenge that you’ve faced? How did you overcome it (or how are you working on it)?
I used to be disappointed when comparing myself to somebody who has trained for a long time. Now that I’ve trained for a few months at WLCF I can compare to myself. I am now setting aggressive yet achievable goals based on past workouts – and it feels great to hit those goals.
What’s one thing you’ve learned through your time at WLCF? This could be about health and fitness, about yourself, or about how to approach life in general.
The power of the mind is incredible. Your success at any workout depends as much or even more on your mindset as your fitness/strength level. I’ve gotten so much more out of crossfit than any other workout routine because of how much I enjoy it and how motivated I am to improve.
How do you stay active outside of the gym? How has your training here connected to that?
I’ve become hooked to obstacle course races like Tough Mudder. These push me to my limits and nothing has prepped me more than the training at WLCF.
What goals (big or small) are you working towards now? Have the types of goals you set for yourself changed since you started crossfit?
Keep training! Specifically work on complex movements like the snatch – my limited mobility is something I need to work on. This is definitely crossfit-inspired, since I had never done a snatch before starting at WLCF.
What’s your favorite time of day to be in the gym and why?
Mornings! There is very little excuse to not hit the gym. In the past I would go after work – but something always came up and I even went for months without exercise.
Also, I’ve got more energy when I wake up to push myself at the gym – I get much more out of the workout. And after that I have more energy lasting all day.
What physical activity, sport or adventure have you always wanted to try? Why?
Rock climbing. I enjoy the outdoors and the backcountry and this is something I’ve never really tried.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice before you started crossfit, what would it be?
Start sooner – years sooner.
